Afton Pilot Killed in Vietnam Action
The Vietnam War seemed ever closer to residents of Star Valley this week with the news of the death of an Afton serviceman, Lt. Col. Joseph L. Hart, 42, a pilot and squadron commander serving with the Air Force in Southeast Asia.
Lt. Col. Hart's mother, Mrs Viola Hart, who now lives in Salt Lake City, received the following telegram from military authorities:
"It is with deep regret that I officially inform you of the death of your son, Lt. Col. Joseph L. Hart. He was killed in action in Southeast Asia on Feb. 25. He was a pilot of an A-1E (Sky Raider) aircraft. His air craft was seen to strike some trees and crash. Death was apparently instantaneous. Major General G.D. Greene".
Further details were lacking as the Independent went to press. the family was expecting a communication from Lt. Col. Hart's immediate superiors with more information. At this time it is not known whether his body was recovered or if it can be shipped home for burial.
It is tentatively planned to hold funeral services or memorial services in his honor at Afton, his hometown, as soon as arrangements can be made. Mrs Hart said. Memorial services are also planned at Arlington, Va for him.
Lt. Col. Hart, or "Bud" as he was known to friends in the valley, was born Sept 11, 1924 at Afton, the son of the late Harry Hart and Viola Hemmert Hart. He attended schools here and graduated from the Star Valley High School, before entering the military service.
He made the Air Force his career, serving in World War II and subsequent undeclared wars, earning numerous decorations. The Independent carried an article just two weeks ago, telling of his recent promotion to the rank of Lieutenant Colonel, his assignment as commander of the First air Force Squadron in V8ietnam. and of his being awarded the air Force Commendation Medal, following outstanding work for the air Force in the Pentagon Washington. He had been in Vietnam since September 1965.

Memorial services Held Here for Lt. Col. J.L. Hart
Memorial services were held Tuesday, March 7 in the Afton First Ward LDS Chapel at 1 p.m. with Bp. Jacob S. Kellersberger conducting, for Air Force Lt. Col. Joseph L. Hart, 42, who was killed by ground fire Feb 25 while flying an armed reconnaissance mission over enemy territory in Vietnam.
Military honors were preformed by an Air Force Honor Guard from Hill Air Force Base, Utah. Memorial services had previously been conducted Monday at Ft. Myer, Va.

Joseph L. Hart, known to most in his younger days as "Bud" was born in Thayne, Wyo. Sept 11, 1924 the son of Harry W. and viola C. Hemmert Hart, and moved as a child to Afton, where he attended school and spent his youth. He graduated from the Star Valley High School in 1942. He had a passion for flying, and had his pilot's license at an early age.
Soon after graduation, he enlisted in the Navy V-4 Program. The U.S. was at war and he felt his obligation to serve his country. He served in the Navy and the U.S. Coast Guard as a pilot during World war II, seeing action in Europe, Africa, the Pacific and Alaska.
He left the service shortly from 1948 to 1951 to finish earning his B.S. degree at Utah State University, Logan, Utah. He received his master's degree in public administration from George Washington University, Washington D.C. in 1963.
He married Mary Lou Nagel in 1944 and two daughters were born to them, Linda Ann and Susan Lee. They were divorced, and he later married Charlotte Barbour and a son, Joseph L. Jr. was born to them.
He joined the Air Force after World War II and after achieving the rank of Major was assigned in July 1963 to the Air Force Command Post in the Pentegon in Washington as senior operations officer on the Emergency action Team. During December of the next year, he was transferred to the Plans Presentation Branch, where he was Assistant chief of the Pacific and Far East Section.
He later volunteered fro combat duty in Vietnam and after completing training in the Douglas A-2 Skyrader last September, was assigned as executive (rest of obit not found).
